Discussion of Cohen testimony inside.
The reality show presidency continues... So, will any of this make any difference? Is this the first step toward impeachment, or just another chapter in the dumpster fire that has been the Trump campaign/presidency?

The base won’t care.
As amusing as Cohen’s words promise , none of it is news for those us with a functioning brain and an attention span.

Hard for me not to laugh every time he refers to Giu liani as his “TV lawyer”...

I guess it depends on what he has the receipts for. The GOP has shown their willingness to wring their hands, yet kowtow to everything he does, so I doubt much will come from them. The fact that a republican congressman appeared to attempt to witness tamper last night, and the GOP tried to postpone the hearing and/or make it closed, show they’re afraid of what he’ll say.
I don’t think Trump is going anywhere until Mueller’s report is released. I think Don Jr. and Ivanka are fucked though.

I do wonder what percentage of the people who voted for him are actually his “loyal base” that would vote for him regardless of anything. Add to that the ones that vote only with their pocketbook.
There is some new info this morning: the hush-money payment check from Trump’s own account while he was president , and the word that Stone told Trump about the impending Wikileaks dump of DNC emails.

We’ve basically arrived at the point I have been fearing since the national conversation strayed from the starting point of an agreed-upon set of facts. I don’t have to give examples but let’s just start with the Inauguration. He literally said it wasn’t raining when it was. Then lied about the crowd size which was visibly, demonstrably, unequivocally a lie for anyone with eyes.
So the thing is, he has been distorting and messing with the question of “what is the truth” for so long that here we have a credible
witness, testifying under oath in front of Congress, saying “The President committed a serious crime” and providing all the necessary evidence to back it up. And yet, we’re wondering if it will mean anything. And this is glossing over
all the other controversy surrounding this President, which is substantial.
This, above all, worries me the most. I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again.

Remember what 45 said about the poorly educated , and what he could do on 5th avenue. He knows his base. That combined with those who will throw everything into the fire for a $20 tax savings will make all of this an interesting exercise, and the next election daunting for those of us not conned by a crook.
I think the best we can hope for is multiple state level prosecutions once this regime is over.

He needs to work on restoring his credibility with the committee and the public , but the documents that he’s sharing definitely help that. The abandonment (or dismissal) of the truth by much of the voting public is a scary thing... I’m just thankful that our government has as many checks and balances as it does. Imagine where we’d be if Trump had even more power than he does.

There’s a bogey now — the extremism showing up on the left.
My parents are a good example. Former hippies who grew up, earned a little
real money, and slowly turned conservative mostly for fiscal reasons. No matter what Trump does, every time AOC opens her mouth, they’re doubling down on The Donald. It kills me to see, but I can’t completely fault it.

Even though some of the stuff she says is out there, it’s at least aiming in the right direction. Trump just fires wildly in every direction with no rhyme or reason...how supposedly logical people still support him baffles me. My dad is a hardcore Trump supporter too and I don’t get it.

I can see how people get so jaded with politics (tons of corruption on both sides), that they just decide to vote the way that will be best for them personally, but I will never understand how someone could put down a mark for a person like Trump (my parents also voted for him, sadly, more for the changes he’d make on the Court - I urged them strongly not to support him ).
Will be interesting to see if the Ds manage to screw this up again, and put up a candidate against Trump that’s just as unsavory as Hillary...

Imagine where we’d be if Trump had even more power than he does.
It’s true, even if these checks and balances take a long time to take effect. He has really taken the method of plowing ahead, make it up as you go, ask forgiveness not permission, deny deny deny, to a new extreme that we’ve never seen in public office before. I’m eager for him to face some consequences for his behavior, almost regardless of his politics and policies. Saying something on record or on video or whatever, then denying having said that days/hours later is just not something we can tolerate from public figures, especially as a continuous pattern.

From the ghostwriter of his book:
Trump is “value-free”, “a sociopath”, with “no conscience”.

He’s a master of deflection and the news cycle , that’s for sure. There’s always a new headline that takes precedence over the last controversy.

Sounds like more of the “I got mine, to hell with you” generation. 45 is the most blunt personification of that era.

Nothing that was/will asked and answered today will make any difference and no, it is not the first step towards impeachment. Ultimately the breaking news is that there will be no breaking news. Cohen isn’t saying anything that sane people with even a modicum of intelligence don’t already know. Trump is a crook, a conman, a racist, an idiot, completely inept, a dotard, etc. He thinks he’s the worlds best businessman and sneakiest crook, he’s a wannabe mob boss, wannabe A list celebrity, suffering from narcissistic personality disorder who has always hated that truly elite people reject him for being just so fucking gross and tacky. I could keep ranting, but I’ll stop there.
Ultimately, today’s testimony is just like screaming into the void.

The most conservative people I know are all either former hippies or convicts. For the hippies I think it’s more of an LSD thing, and the convicts more of a racial thing.

I can’t disagree with that. I think Trump’s major failing, and AOC’s “minor” one, is that they don’t really begin their ideas with a Vision. They just throw out very hardline ideas with sort of a “take it or leave it” attitude. Political leaders need to start with more vague goals, have some discourse, then hone their specific plan with a little more consensus. That’s leadership.
Going deeper on AOC, I think her brand of liberalism is empowered (or even brought into existence) mainly by people disaffected by Trump. I can’t fault that emotion.

I don’t get the whole credible witness argument coming from the White House. They’re basically saying well he lied before to protect our guy, so how do you know he’s telling the truth now? Which is it? Either he didn’t lie before and your guy is innocent – OR he’s lying now. If he lied before as you’re pointing out, then you’re admitting that your guy is a crook and a fraud. You can’t have it both ways!
Also he’s coming up with some pretty damning evidence – from recordings to checks signed by DJT, along with a fact pattern that corroborates pretty damn will with a whole bunch of other super shady shit we already know about El Presidente that should’ve already sunk him months ago. But no, we’re in a new normal where nobody knows up from down anymore so we’re all sitting here pointing fingers at the other side, just depending on which side we’re on.
Also, what incentive does he have to continue lying? He’s already been convicted and is heading to prison. His only option to slither away would be to play nice with DJT and hope for a presidential pardon. He’s clearly not doing that – so again, I’m not seeing the incentive he has to be lying right now given what he’s saying.

A lot of what she’s saying really isn’t out there at all though, looking back historically or at other countries around the world. And as she recently said in an interview – she’s throwing out suggestions here as a starting point. And all people do are mock or complain. How about they actually propose some solutions too instead? “If you don’t like what I’m doing, you do it” is paraphrasing what she said – which I can agree with. But instead all these other mouth pieces are just sitting there with a status quo that they’ve convinced themselves works just fine for everyone because they think it works for them.

“out there” was probably the wrong phrase...maybe over ambitious. But honestly that’s what we need right now. Climate change is happening and needs to be addressed yesterday, inequality is rising and will become a bigger and bigger problem, and people are dying simply due to not being able to afford care. I’d be surprised if even half of what she’s proposing gets done, even if democrats controlled congress and the presidency.

Yup, this has been building for decades as we sat and watched saying everything is OK. If we truly want to fix things it’s going to take a LOT along the lines of what she is proposing. But most likely the most we can expect is little band aids here and there that will hopefully keep things from sliding in to complete chaos. If we actually wanted to Make America Great Again – hell we’re going to need bold visions exactly like this to make that happen. Otherwise we’re just taking watered down versions of what others are already doing and will see lukewarm results. Make no mistake we will continue to have unprecedented levels of wealth being created but it will all sit with a gilded class, and there’s only so long that a system like that can last for various reasons.

All this is doing at the end of the day, is giving il Douche’s base more of an excuse to rile themselves up, and further guaranteeing that there will not be a peaceful transition of power.
There’s more than enough at this point to charge half the “administration” with a dozen felonies each minimum, seditious conspiracy, and thanks to today, high treason. (We’re still legally at war with North Korea. Treason can only apply when we are legally at war with the state actor.)
The Republican party is the party of terrorism and dictatorship, period. They will not give up power, and they won’t hesitate to do literally anything to keep their hands on it. And their base will support it. See also: North Carolina . Where the local GOP is continuing to scream and cry and threaten over the voiding of a nakedly fraudulent election. Where they were the ones committing the fraud.
Forget “not normal.” This long ago escalated well past that point.

I honestly wonder what it would take for a majority of the Rs to finally grow a spine and throw this guy out of office... Is there anything that the Mueller report could show them that will actually get them to drop their allegiance to this asshole?

Haha yup. And I like how there’s no pushback about Cohen being labeled as his ex-“fixer”. Like what legitimate upstanding citizen has a fixer?
Goes along with so many other things about Trump that we know that would have been automatic disqualifiers for any other politician, but for him well it’s just who he is…a slimy creep, but hey he’s their slimy creep whom they’ve struck a convenient partnership with to advance whatever pet topic they base all their voting decisions on, no matter how revolting the rest of his agenda and overall existence is. AARRGHHH.

Usually I see Trump stickers on vehicles and I either laugh or it pisses me off. Yesterday I was almost impressed. Someone driving a brand new Tundra had a custom made Trump sticker across their rear window that said “Trump – because I’m sick of paying for your ass”. Misguide d, wrong, and so many other things you could call that – but at least there’s some honesty there in wearing their mean-spiritedness on their sleeve like that.

I am fortunate to live in a blue area where such stickers are rare.
The best part about the Tundra sticker is that there’s near certainty that the driver benefited from public sector or family largesse.

I live in Portland, OR so not exactly a red area…but the urban/rural divide is pretty sudden and a short drive away, so such things aren’t too uncommon especially if you work outside the downtown area, like I do. And Oregon, outside of the metropolitan areas, has more than its fair share of nutjobs, I’m sure you’re aware.

I honestly don’t know. Its been shown that Russia was able to infiltrate numerous right wing groups (NRA), as well as other politicians. Mitch McConnell seems content with ignoring everything so that he can get his agenda pushed through, much like Paul Ryan was.

Yeah, OR seems to be on a slightly different wavelength from WA - the cities are similar, but the rural areas in WA are at least a little purple, at least some of them.
